Moringa is an exceptionally beneficial superfood for men. It can help improve fertility and enhance sexual performance. According to research, this miracle plant may also promote prostate health and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. In this article, we’ll expand on these benefits and current scientific studies that support them.

Moringa Oleifera Overview

Originating in the Himalayan foothills of Southeast Asia, the Moringa oleifera tree, also known as the drumstick tree or “miracle tree”, has been used traditionally for centuries to treat various diseases.  Learn more about Moringa, its history and benefits here:

Moringa Benefits For Men

 1. May Improve Fertility

Infertility affects 8-12% of couples worldwide. This condition comes with psychological, emotional, and medical implications that can result in trauma, stress, and even depression (1).

Of all infertility cases, approximately 40-50% are due to “male factor” infertility with as many as 2% of all men exhibiting suboptimal sperm parameters. This could mean low sperm concentration, poor sperm motility, or abnormal morphology (1).

Animal studies in both rabbits and rats have revealed moringa supplementation increases semen volume, sperm count, and motility (2), (3), (4), (5).

These results are encouraging, however, studies in humans are still needed for further insight into the use of moringa for enhancing male fertility.

2. Can Enhance Sexual Performance

Sexual dysfunction in men can include a variety of issues; low libido and erectile dysfunction being two of the most common.

One study found Moringa oleifera leaf extract to be a potential aphrodisiac, particularly for people with stressful daily lifestyles (6).  In addition, this same study saw moringa supplementation relax smooth muscle in the penis of healthy rats. This allowed for more blood flow to the area – which in turn helped to alleviate erectile dysfunction in rats with diabetes.

Erectile dysfunction is the result of blood flow issues like high blood pressure, high levels of fat in the blood, or medical conditions like diabetes. Polyphenols can enhance blood flow by increasing nitric oxide and decreasing blood pressure. These beneficial compounds are found in abundance in the Moringa leaf.  In fact, animal studies have shown this extract inhibits specific enzymes linked to erectile dysfunction and oxidative stress (7), (8).

Unfortunately, there have been no human studies to date on this topic. While there are many testimonies to support these effects, we need more research to confirm Moringa’s positive impact on male fertility and sexual performance in humans, specifically.

3. Can Promote Prostate Health

Worldwide, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed male malignancy and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in men. This amounted to 1,414,249 newly diagnosed cases and 375,000 deaths worldwide yearly from this disease in 2020 (9).

Luckily, there has been ample research to support this nutrient-rich plant’s ability to help prevent and fight cancer in the prostate. One medical review found anticancer and apoptosis inducing effects of Moringa oleifera against PC-3 prostate cancer cells via targeting key molecules of Hedgehog signaling (10).

A second study analyzed the inhibitory effect of M. oleifera alkaloids on proliferation and migration of PC-3 human prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. The findings concluded that Moringa oleifera inhibits the proliferation and migration, and induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest of PC-3 cells (11).

Further, an animal study involving rats found Moringa to be effective in preventing testosterone- induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by significantly reducing testosterone-induced prostate weight, prostate index, serum testosterone, and prostate-specific antigen (12).

Finally, in a fourth study assessed the bioefficacy, bioaccessible and anticancer activity of Moringa oleifera in a PC-3 cell line before and after simulated in vitro digestion. Results revealed that total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and TAC were significantly reduced after in vitro digestion (13).

Digested moringa showed a higher level of biological activity against the PC-3 cell line and had a noteworthy effect in apoptosis and inhibiting the colony formation ability (13).

Overall, these studies have helped increase the understanding of Moringa’s anticancer, apoptosis producing, and metastasis preventing properties in human prostate cancer cells.  Collectively, this information suggests Moringa supplementation might be beneficial as a targeted therapeutic strategy in prostate cancer cells.

Conclusion

Moringa truly is a “miracle tree” with an almost endless list of possible benefits. The studies in this post all point toward promising benefits for male fertility, sexual health, and cancer prevention.

While more human studies are always wanted and welcome, the vast variety of animal and human research on this topic give reason to believe in the merit of Moringa supplementation for male health. If you are suffering from a form of sexual dysfunction or infertility, Moringa could help.
