Irish Sea Moss or Chondrus Crispus, has been praised as a secret weapon for immunity, energy, and nutrition over the last few years. One of the most popular ways to consume Wildcrafted Irish Moss is by making raw sea moss gel and adding it to fruit smoothies; the gel can also be used topically as face and hair masks.

In this article, we are going to break down the process of making your own sea moss gel at home into 5 easy to follow steps.

STEP 1 – Rinse Well

Start by taking your raw sea moss out of the package and place it into a large colander. With clean hands, rinse thoroughly with cold water. Use your fingers to gently brush of excess salt and debris from the seaweed.

STEP 3 – Soak In Water

Place your now clean sea moss in a large bowl. Fill the bowl with cold water (preferably filtered or spring water) until the moss is completely submerged.

The biggest question people run into when it comes to soaking their sea moss is how long they should soak it for. The standard recommendation is to soak overnight, but you can soak anywhere from 12-24 hours.

During this time, the sea moss will expand, becoming gooey and slippery to the touch. You may have to add additional water at some point during the soaking process, so make sure to check on it occasionally if you can.

STEP 3 – Rinse Again

Using tongs, remove the soaked sea moss from the bowl, place into a colander and repeat step one. Make sure to reserve the water your moss was soaking in, as it now contains nutrients from the sea moss and will be used in step four.

You might also notice that the color has changed slightly and appears whiter. This is normal and to be expected after the soaking process.

PRO TIP: At this point, some people choose to gently boil their sea moss to help expedite the process. I usually recommend against this method as the risk of losing nutrients during the heating process is too high. It is better to use no heat and make the traditional raw way.

STEP 4 – Blend It

Put your now clean again, soaked sea moss into a high-powered blender.

Start by adding 1 cup of the water you saved from step three. Keep adding more water until you reach the consistency you prefer.

Blend for 1 – 3 minutes or until you achieve a smooth, gel-like consistency.

STEP 5 – Store & Refrigerate

Now that your sea moss is blended, you’ll want to store it properly to keep it fresh for as long as possible.

Place your gel into a glass, air-tight container, mark it with the date it was made, and store in the refrigerator. Over the next two hours, your gel will continue to thicken and become more jelly-like.

Raw sea moss gel can last up to 3 weeks in the fridge and can be frozen for up to 3 months.

PRO TIP: Pour your gel into ice cube trays and freeze. You can then add these frozen sea moss gel cubes right into your daily sea moss smoothie!
